I AM AN AMERICAN SOLDIER
By Rudy Kovar
I pack a few belongings, say goodbye to family and friends
And leave my home to serve my country.
I am a soldier.
I train for war
And one day in my camouflage of green,
I hide unseen in forest, swamp or sand-
My gun in hand to slay the enemy.
I fight horrible wars in order to establish peace.
I deny myself liberty so I can bring freedom to others.
I respect all cultures and all religions.
I am an American soldier - defender of Democracy-
A bridge to freedom, honor, justice, mercy, hope.
My buddies are my family.
I live on whatever sustains me.
I sleep in ditches with little water
And no shower for weeks on end.
I never complain about the hardships of life.
I welcome them.
I survive on loyalty and a desire
For decency for the human race.
Look on my face and see the character of just behavior
For I control the high ground between sanity and tyranny.
And if I pay the ultimate price-
the sacrifice of my own blood,
Remember, I do not die in vain.
I die for you!
When the bagpipes wail and the lone bugle taps I retreat...
Beyond the purple mountain majesty where all soldiers rest.
Weep for me but not too long;
Rather feel my spirit strong marching beside you
And know when the roll call is taken I will rise up unshaken.
My courage nudges you over the next hill
And we will raise the flag of victory for our America.
"Hooray for our side!"
Forever I will fight righteous wars
And heal the scars of all humanity,
For the duty of my soul is to slay insanity with the force of FREEDOM.
I am an American Soldier, the eternal warrior...
I CAN NEVER DIE !
